Purpose: This website was created to function
as a pre-reading activity for seventh graders about to read the play,
A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley. It was created
during my student teaching at Smithtown Middle School in Smithtown, Long
Island. It was my hope that if students had a general background
about Victorian England, they would more readily appreciate the setting
and themes of the play. Students responded to this lesson with
enthusiasm. They genuinely seemed to enjoy the work. The
assignment was to complete a handout while exploring the site. The
handout served three purposes: it functioned as a study guide; it
structured their experience within the website; it allowed me to grade
their comprehension of the material presented. Please
